Help the cubs
The rescued cubs and the three adult lions need specialist care and feeding every day. In the coming period, we will continue to work on the lion family’s recovery at our rescue center in Spain. All help for the care is more than welcome!Donate a meal for the lions now.
The story
On Monday 2 December, 12 lions (1 male, 2 females and as many as 9 cubs) arrived in AAP Spain after we were able to rescue them from a French circus. Here, the animals were trapped in a dirty circus wagon. This was the biggest rescue of big cats ever for AAP. With your donation, we can give these animals a better future.About quarantine
After arriving at our rescue center in Spain, all lions first spend several weeks in quarantine. This allows them to get used to their new environment in peace and we can determine how healthy they are. It is a fairly bare enclosure, which is necessary to carry out medical checks. The cleaner the enclosure, the less chance of any diseases spreading!Questions & answers - livestream cubs
No, the livestream is only on during the day: from 9.30am to 6pm. At night, we keep it dark for the animals and the animals are guarded by a night guard.
All animals arriving at AAP go into quarantine for a certain period of time.
During this period, they undergo an extensive medical examination. For example, blood and faeces are checked for pathogenic viruses, bacteria and parasites. Only if animals repeatedly test ‘negative’, the quarantine is lifted and the animals are allowed out. A treatment plan is drawn up for each animal, including diet, medication and (problem) behaviour.
Quarantine is quite a boring period, as the animals are kept in a rather bare space. Unfortunately, this is necessary to treat the animals properly. For example, if an animal is found to have a parasite and it is in an enclosure with all sorts of playground equipment and wood chips on the floor, it is very difficult to rid it of the parasite. It may have nested in the soil by now. So the enclosure is kept quite bare so we can keep it clean.
Due to the large number of animals, the cubs, together with their mothers, are in 3 connected quarantine enclosures. We can only see one of the 3 facilities with the cameras. Occasionally they all move to others, either because of cleaning by the keepers, or because they themselves change places.
Once all animals are declared healthy by our vets and do not carry any diseases, they are given access to a spacious outdoor enclosure. For the cubs, we make available the largest outdoor enclosure of about 4,000m2.
Of course! Questions can be sent to info@aap.nl ovv livestream.
A team of professional caretakers will keep an eye on the animals throughout the day. So don’t email us if they frolic or fight with each other, that’s part of the job. If things get out of hand, the keepers will intervene.
