It is with great sadness that we share the news that leopard Brave has passed away from acute heart failure at his forever home, @isindilebigcat_sanctuary in South Africa.

Brave was rescued from a warzone in Eastern Ukraine in late 2022. He had been abandoned by a private collector, locked in a small cage without food or water and under extreme stress from the surrounding conflict. With the help of courageous military volunteers and UAnimals, Brave reached AAP’s rescue centre in Spain. Although he was frightened at first, our animal caretakers managed to gain his trust, and little by little Brave began to settle into his new life.

In early 2025, Brave was ready to move to his forever home with our outplacement partner Isindile in South Africa. There, he enjoyed safety and freedom in a dedicated reserve.

Unfortunately, a few days ago he was found unconscious in his shelter, and the vet was unable to save his life.

We are devastated by this news, but also grateful that we were able to give Brave the life he truly deserved. He passed away in surroundings that suited him and with a partner that cared deeply for his wellbeing. He will always be in our hearts.

Today is World Wildlife Day! 🌍 At AAP, we believe that wild animals belong in nature. That's why we launched our Born to be Wild project, dedicated to securing a better future for Barbary macaques.

These endangered animals are frequently taken from the wild and smuggled into Europe, where they are kept in unsuitable conditions and isolated from others of their species.

The Born to be Wild project works to change that - by returning groups of rescued Barbary macaques to their natural habitat in Morocco's Middle Atlas mountain range.

After the first successful release in 2025, we’re now preparing to release a second group, including a few newborn Barbary macaques! 💚

With the final health checks complete, we’re almost ready to bring this group back to nature, where they belong.

Together, we can keep wildlife wild. 🌱

Chimpanzee Prudence is the undisputed leader of he

Chimpanzee Prudence is the undisputed leader of her group, which also includes the males Achille, Tino and Sony. As the leader, Prudence enjoys the privilege of choosing her favourite food first. Fruit is always at the top of her list, though tomatoes and potatoes are firm favourites as well.

AAP rescued Prudence together with chimpanzee Antoine in 1991, after they had been kept as pets in a filthy basement in Belgium. At our Spanish rescue centre, we often see Prudence spending time with Sony and Achille. Tino, the largest of the group, shows her great respect despite his impressive size. And with good reason: Prudence can be rather bossy. Yet, she is also affectionate and patient with her companions. 💚

Young chimpanzee Giggi was a victim of #illegaltra

Young chimpanzee Giggi was a victim of #illegaltrade and neglect. He was restrained with a two metre chain that had cut deeply into his groin, causing severe injuries. The restricted movement also led to stereotypical and unnatural behaviour — a clear indication of prolonged stress and suffering. In addition, Giggi was forced to live as a pet and without conspecifics, meaning he never learned natural chimpanzee behaviour and has become overly focused on humans.

Since his arrival at AAP Almere two weeks ago, a team of dedicated caretakers and behavioural biologists has begun teaching him natural behaviours. This will increase his chances to be able to interact with other chimpanzees in the near future.
