Sad news about sugar glider Mango. We recently found him lifeless in his enclosure. After examination, it appeared that Mango had a haemorrhage in his abdomen.
Mango was brought to our rescue centre in Almere in 2023. He had been living as a pet with a veterinarian who had bought him and his two brothers from a pet shop in Amsterdam. His owner was convinced that with her knowledge she could provide the three sugar gliders with the proper care. Unfortunately, this did not work out well. One of Mango’s brothers died. Mango later developed an eye infection, which resulted in his eye having to be removed. Because of the operation, he was separated from his last younger brother. Sadly, this animal also died. The owner realized sugar gliders are social animals, so she contacted AAP to bring over Mango.
Together with other sugar gliders
At AAP, we paired Mango with other sugar gliders. Together with Radagast, Didache, Duizeltje and Sushi, he formed a close-knit group.
We didn’t see the animals much because they are active at night and sleep during the day. They were only woken up briefly when they needed to be weighed. We could also tell from their food consumption that the animals were healthy and well.
Bleeding in the abdomen
Mango was in good health. We were therefore shocked when we found him lying lifeless in his enclosure one morning. After examination, it appeared that Mango had suffered bleeding in his abdomen. This was most likely the cause of his sudden death.
Mango was 9 years old. We are grateful and happy that we were able to give him a dignified life with other animals at AAP.
