AAP has recently taken in a Ukrainian serval. The animal, named Tila, belonged to a family that fled Ukraine for Spain because of the war. Once in Spain, they decided they no longer wanted Tila around the children and sought help. Ultimately, Tila was confiscated and brought to AAP Spain.
No space and danger to children
Tila was originally purchased legally from a breeder in Ukraine. In her former home, the serval had a spacious outdoor enclosure. However, in Spain, there was not enough space to keep her. Moreover, Tila was growing rapidly. With young children in the house and regular visits from friends, the family no longer felt safe.
Paperwork
Relocating Tila proved very complicated because the owners did not have the correct import papers. Attempts to legalise the animal via CITES documentation failed because there was no response from CITES Ukraine. There was therefore no other option but to have the serval confiscated by SEPRONA, the Spanish nature conservation police. In consultation with the Guardia Civil, we were finally able to collect Tila.
The family was very understanding about the confiscation and even wanted to become donors to AAP because they greatly appreciate our work.

"The children are scared. The breeder said that Tila was used to living indoors. She has a litter box on every floor, but she doesn’t always use it. If you are considering buying a serval, don’t do it!”
