AAP starts construction of new building for small mammals

In 2025, AAP Animal Advocacy and Protection will build a new building for smaller exotic animals. The former tropical greenhouse that was used for this purpose was built in 48 hours in 1996 thanks to the TV programme De Uitdaging with Angela Groothuizen. After almost 30 years of service, this greenhouse had reached the end of its life, and the insulation and available space no longer met AAP’s requirements. That is why the new, sustainable design includes more space for rescued animals and better climate control.
‘Unfortunately, the number of requests for shelter for (small) mammals in need is not decreasing, but actually increasing,’ explains director Erik Peeters. ’In addition to large primates and felines, AAP is also taking in more and more small mammals for whom a tropical temperature is desirable. That is why we have decided to invest in a mammal building that meets the needs of animals that we will rescue in the future. The new building will have space for a wide variety of animals, from degus and common marmosets to sugar gliders, suricates and ring-tailed lemurs.’

Future-proof building

The work will take place from spring until the end of 2025. The former greenhouse has already been demolished and will be replaced by a permanent building. The new building will have 27 enclosures in which the animals will have the choice of being inside or outside. The enclosures can be connected to each other by means of hatches and made larger or smaller, depending on the needs of the animals. Thirty-nine enclosures will also be built for smaller mammals such as degus and squirrels. The outdoor enclosures for raccoons, felines, and silver foxes, for example, will remain in their current form. All enclosures will be custom-designed and built for AAP.

The new building meets AAP’s current sustainability requirements. The building will not be connected to the gas mains, it will have a heat pump and it will be fully insulated. This will significantly reduce energy consumption. The old greenhouse has been dismantled and removed in such a way that materials such as aluminium, steel and concrete could be recycled.

Temporary housing for mammals

We are always looking for new homes for the animals we rescue where they can stay for the rest of their lives. We have succeeded in finding new homes for some of the mammals at our outplacement partners, and they have been moved before construction began. The animals that are still at AAP have been placed in temporary enclosures on the premises.

Financing

The new building has been financed with our own funds, and in addition we have received a large donation from a foundation. AAP does not receive a subsidy for this new building.
